Case
Study:
The
Request
As part of the sales process, Teknion wanted to
be able to display 3-D models of products and allow prospective
customers to change the fabrics and finishes applied to
the worksurfaces, panels, and storage units.
The Approach
Teknion Designer 3D is a cutting edge visualization tool that deepens
the sales experience. This program showcases precisely modeled, interactive
3D views of typical Teknion panel system layouts. Teknion representatives
can rotate the view to any angle, and select any combination of fabrics,
colors, and finishes. This immediate visualization of prospective layout
and design options creates an indelible image in a customer’s mind
of how Teknion products can fulfill the needs of the workplace.
A key to the strategic advantage of Teknion
Designer 3D is the merging of 3D technology with easy-to-use
controls. Teknion Designer 3D provides an intuitive, user-friendly
presentation displaying custom-built models of the Teknion
product lines, and mapping computer scans of actual Teknion
fabric and finish samples to those models.
There were several priorities in this
project:
- Ease of use: targeted to the casual
user, the navigation had to be simple and elegant
- Extensive selection of details: users
had to be able to apply any and all fabrics and finishes
to the appropriate surfaces.
- Accuracy of representation: the models
and the finishes had to communicate an accurate over-all
impression
The Teknion Designer puts the power of
live 3D graphics into the hands of field sales and marketing
representatives. The System literally gives users the
opportunity to design their own products, and then generate
requests for actual fabric and finish samples. Users can
zoom in and out to study the overall station or individual
sections, and they can rotate the 3D model to view it
from all sides. They also can print the model as currently
shown on the screen.
The System draws from a fabric and finish database to
allow for the selection of the appropriate finishes. Digitized photographs
of cloth and finish samples -- as well as product models -- are housed
in resource files outside the compiled program, allowing for rapid updates
to the content. An advantage of the Teknion Designer 3D environment is
the flexibility and expandability of the system. Teknion can process their
CAD files into 3D visualizations and add them to the inventory in the
program. Similarly, textures and materials can be added to the system
for mapping onto the products.
The Result
The program has proved an immense success. Simply
by sending out electronic scans of the fabric swatches
instead of sending everyone a large binder of fabric samples,
Teknion has realized increased efficiency in the sales
arena.
